Mara Ellison

Mara trained in the cutting rooms of factual television, starting as an assistant on returning observational series before moving into the chair on single documentaries. Fourteen years later she has delivered episodes across network and streamer strands, most of them in the ninety-minute space where structure has nowhere to hide.

She is known for the long assembly — the willingness to cut a rough at twice the length and then argue it down, scene by scene, until the spine is undeniable. Producers send her the difficult shoots: thin coverage, unreliable narrators, a story that only reveals itself in the sixth week of rushes.

In the room she is quiet and fast, and she writes as she cuts. Voiceover drafts come out of the timeline rather than into it, which is why her cuts tend to survive contributor and compliance passes intact.
